(CNN) Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori, a 25-year-old detainee for human rights abuses, died on Sunday for humanitarian reasons.
Fujimori "suffers from progressive disease, degeneration and incurable disease," according to a statement by the presidential office of today's Pedro Paulo Kuczynski. "Prison conditions pose serious risks to life, health and well-being."
Fujimori was convicted in May 2011, After being convicted of lethal assassination in 2009 He has been president since 1990-2000.
On Saturday, 79-year-old Fujimori was transferred to Lima Hospital after a drop in blood pressure and abnormal heart rhythm.
Kutsinski gave Fujimori and 7 other "in the same situation" on Sunday night.
Fujimori's son, Kenji Fujimori, was one of several lawmakers who abstained last week to remove Kuczynski from office in a bribery scandal. Kucinski fled the house with eight votes.
Kenji Fujimori thanked Kuczynski on Twitter for his "gentle and generous gesture" that he accepted his father's grace.
Keiko Fujimori, the daughter of Alberto Fujimori who succeeded in driving Kuczynski last year, tweeted:
"Today is a great day for my family, and for Fujiimi my father is finally free, Christmas is filled with hope and joy!"
